It does what it says it will…….
Honestly didn’t think I’d keep using it… but I am!I bought the Muse S Athena thinking it would be another thing I’d try for a week and forget about. I’ve done that with so many wearables. But I am happy with this device. At first I just wanted to try the digital sleeping pills. I’ve always been a light sleeper and I was curious if it could show me anything useful/help keep me asleep. It did. The app showed where my sleep was getting interrupted and when I was actually getting deep rest. It wasn’t perfect every night, but it made me more aware of what was messing with my sleep and the digital sleeping pills seem to help in keeping me asleep during the night (which is cool). The real surprise was how much I started using the daytime stuff. The focus and calm sessions don’t take long, but they help me reset when I’m in that mental fog. I’ll throw it on for 10 minutes before diving into something stressful and I just feel more steady after. The band is soft enough that I forget I’m wearing it. I’ve had a couple times where the connection didn’t register right away, but support helped me out quickly and it’s been smooth since. It’s not magic and it won’t fix your whole life, but it does what it says it will. And that’s rare enough for me to keep going with it.

There is no apparent way to turn sleep on or off or record it
Saw great reviews of this. And lots of ads on Instagram. Received the device to use for sleep. It’s literally like the whole design team never saw or used the product. Quite simply there is no on and off button to measure sleep. Set up the device for sleep but it recorded nothing. The app is a blizzard of meaningless apps but missed the focal feature…an on and off button for measuring sleep. Infuriating that companies selling health products dont have a design team or have the most elemental understanding of user interfaces.

Recommend for sleep and meditation
It is fascinating to see how my brain responds during meditation and sleep. Setup was quick and easy, and compared to the many sleep trackers I’ve tried, this one stands out. The insights feel more personal and actionable, I actually made changes that improved my deep sleep within just a few nights. The device is sleek, well-built, and delivers surprisingly rich insights. The real-time meditation feedback was an unexpected bonus. Battery life could be better, but the quality of the data makes it worth it.

Very uncomfortable to sleep in
I bought the Muse S Athena to replace old Sleep Shephard Blue which had finally stopped working. I find it annoying that I have to have to use separate headphones, but I knew that when I bought it. Additionally, I have to practically soak my head with water in order get the EEG sensors to pick up properly. The sensors do stay connected through the night though. I have the Muse 2 and do not have this problem.Since I have the Muse 2, I bought this to be a sleep aid. I have an Apple Watch and just bought a pair of the Ozlo Sleepbuds (which are great) and have worn all three together. I have not found any real difference between the sleep reports from these three devices.I have found that the Muse S Athena works really well for meditation, but I already have a Muse S for that. Finally, I find the Muse S Athena to be very uncomfortable for sleeping. I am a side sleeper, and the headband compresses my ears, causing pain which has woken me up a lot. I will be returning the Muse S Athena.

Might work if you have no hair, basic subscription does not provide basics. Frustrating.
Love the idea of this but it is frustrating. I wanted something that would provide feedback during meditation and breathwork. I think if you have a bald head or really short cropped hair you might have a better experience. It does not matter how much I pull my hair back and try to get the sensors against my skin at the temples the signal drops out. The amount of noise that is created with even tiny movements of the jaw or eyes is ridiculous. It is cool to see biometrics live. Many have complained about the subscription and I will too. What I wanted was to just see the basic metrics without biofeedback and using external audio or just sitting on my own without any of the muse guided practice. In order to just watch your brainwaves live you have to buy the premium subscription. I do not want or need all the guided stuff. I think it is absolutely ridiculous to charge an ongoing subscription fee for such a basic function. I am grateful for amazon because I am returning it. I am buying the flowtime headband instead. It is lighter, simpler and 300 cheaper. If you want the sleep metrics that wouldn’t work but I can not see how the sensors on the muse would stay connected while sleeping as if I breathe sideways they disconnect. Very disappointing but good idea. If someone would create a stand alone product that did not need apps or subscriptions I would buy it right away. I really do not want to be using my phone or iPad for everything or need WiFi or Bluetooth for everything. I like single use devices. Maybe you will have better luck if you have no hair.

Meditation mode only provides 3 hours of battery life.
Hopefully, the clever people at Interaxon will find a way to update the app with the option to turn off the fNIRS during meditation. Alternatively, could follow Mind Monitor’s lead and provide toggles for 4, 8, or 16 Channels, each with Low or High power options. It is possible, and should this happen, it will bring Athena closer to the ‘perfect’ moniker it deserves.

Never lose sleep again
Yes, just finished reading about their digital sleeping pill. Put their devise on at night, listen to the sleep meditation, the MUSE devise is monitoring and recording your brain waves, and when it senses that your brain waves are going up and you may wake it ques the meditation again and sends you back the other way to sleep. Brilliant!

Complete Disappointment. Did Not Work Out of the Box.
This item was a complete disappointment. It did not work for me at all at first, no stats showed up in the app after multiple sessions. It only started working after several attempts and wasting a lot of time troubleshooting with customer support. I own Muse 2, Muse S, and Muse S (2nd gen), and in my opinion this one is by far the worst. For almost $500 price tag, a product should work straight out of the box, not after hours of trial and error. It feels like I may have been sold a defective unit, though I can’t say for sure. I would not recommend.
