    Great So Far!
I’ve only had this light for nine days, so nothing here can address its longevity. I will try to post a later review when I’ve had it for at least six months. But up to this point it exceeds my expectations. I have not had this one for long, but I have been using a light for SAD and for depression in general for over thirty years now. The science has come a long way and there are methodologies in place at this point in history that can help someone find what will work best for them. There are some general requirements for a SAD light that most notable sources all recommend. It should generate up to 10,000 Lux (a measurement of light intensity), the light given off should be UV-free (UV light can harm the eye) and the light should typically be white to be most effective. This light, like many, offers three brightness settings and two colors. It also has a timer to make keeping track of your session easy.It is a convenient size. My desk is a small one and the mug is a large one. The box is about 10 inches by 6 inches with the actual light being a bit smaller. I find it to be a very useful size. It doesn’t get in the way of whatever is typically on my desk but is certainly large enough to give off a very nice, wide light.I find the light to be simple and very user friendly. There isn’t much to figure out and there are instructions for what controls there are. This is a corded light, NOT one with a battery or battery pack. Has to be plugged in to work. This may not be the one if you are looking for a light you can take anywhere and use. It is portable (easy to pick up and move) but not cordless. The light seems to be well made and solid, doesn’t have a “cheap feel” to it.The removable cord is about six feet long, long enough to find a plug in most places but short enough to be readily wound up and tucked into a bag or folder. The stand pops off the back when needed so is also quickly ready to move or pack.I like this light and already have some sense of its effectiveness. The cost is reasonable for what you get. I have paid hundreds of dollars for a SAD light that I do not believe is as good as this one. We’ll see how it stands up over time.As I began, It’s Great So Far!One final note: consult a professional as to the use of this or any other SAD light. The time and technique recommended may vary. Be good to yourself and let your own light shine!

perfect portable size to put on a small table. BRIGHT!
this is nice and compact about the size of a samsung tablet, i wish it had a usb to plug in to be recharged, but the price reflects this, i think it was a good deal and it is a good little lamp. I have one that is 30 years old (huge) and it was time to upgrade. this is very portable and I don’t have a problem with the stand like others have said, you could always get a metal frame stand to use if wanted.

Great little light! Sleek and bright. Works well.
I love my HappyLight! I didn’t have a lot of space and I’d never used a “SAD light” before, so I wanted something economical and on the smaller side. This is perfect! It’s basically the size of a tablet, and the stand detaches easily, making it super simple to take with me when I travel. I spent a few bucks more for the light with a timer function, three brightness levels, and a hue (warm or cool light) option. I’m glad I did, because I kind of eased into the full 10k lumens over the first few uses. I was influenced in part by all the reviewers saying they lived in the dark, rainy Pacific Northwest, so I will add that I do, too! I’m a morning person by nature, but was finding it really hard to WAKE UP on our dark winter mornings here in the PNW. Getting a later start was wrecking my entire day, and then wrecking my sleep at night. Now I get up early, make my coffee, and spend 30-40 minutes reading a book by my light, and I can’t believe the positive ripple effects throughout the 24-hour day. Circadian rhythm restored!

Still testing it out, but mostly happy with the purchase
Well, once I figured how to turn the thing ON, I could tell that this time, I definitely bought something different from an ordinary bright desk lamp. There are instructions in the box (as well as online), but after pushing all the icons on the bottom as instructed, and having nothing come on, I thought I received a defective product even though it arrived in obviously new and undamaged condition. It would have helped to put the directions to turn on the lamp FIRST, rather than the following page. And to save you the trouble, the “on” button is located not at the bottom, but for the HappyLight Touch Plus, the power button is located on the top right edge of the lamp. At the light is absolutely blinding, which really, really surprised me since I use “daylight” bulbs in all my desk lamps in the craft room, and even in the bedside tables since I often will color or knit in bed when I am not feeling well. The bulbs I’m used to are 1200 lumen, 6500K bulbs so we’re talking a really bright white light. But the Verilux lamp is brighter than that. It’s hard to compare since a therapy lamp is measured in “lux” and I don’t have exact figures of what the lumen (brightness of light) or the kelvin (light temperature–cool or warm) the Verilux HappyLight Touch Plus is. All I know is that I was startled about how bright the highest settings were on this thing. Furthermore, I could feel an effect from the light, and it wasn’t good. I felt a bit nauseated and started to get a headache. I switched it off, and re-read the manual and it does mention (and warn) that some people will be extra-sensitive to a real therapy lamp. Some types of mental disorders or eye conditions and people on certain medications including some antidepressants need to take caution and consult with their doctor. Since the lamp WAS recommended to me by my mental health doctor for general depression made worse from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), I figure I would go ahead and continue trying the lamp at a lower level for a short period of time. My doctor is a psychiatrist, so he does also prescribe my medications, and I will have a follow-up appointment in a couple of months. He recommended a lamp with at least 10,000 Lux for about 10-15 minutes first thing in the morning. Since my sleep schedule is also out of whack, “first thing in the morning” hasn’t worked out, but I’ve been trying it various times of day at different settings, especially as the days get more and more overcast and it’s pretty much dark by 5 pm where I live. I haven’t yet figured out a schedule, but since I do know it’s doing SOMETHING, I will keep trying it out. Putting it on the warmest setting at the lowest light kind of mimics the light you get during what photographers and artists call “the golden hour”. It’s very relaxing, but again, I notice that I can’t keep it on for very long (I think I got up to 30 minutes one day, and I was sitting across the room). Here’s the thing–in order to get the full therapeutic effect you need to have it cranked up as high as it will go and be as close as 6 inches away from it. This isn’t as horrible as it sounds, since the design of the lamp allows you to position it in a way you could be sitting at a desk or lying in bed. The light is supposed to reach your eyes, but at the same time, you aren’t supposed to actually look at it. I haven’t figured out how that’s supposed to work. I think if I put the lamp off to the side, I can be fairly close to the lamp, see the light, but not be blinded by the direct glare from the lamp. I’m taking my time with this one. What other positives I see is the size. It’s the size of a typical tabletop makeup mirror. So it’s big enough to project the light without having to hold the thing right in your face, but small and light enough to carry it from room to room. It’s made so you could mount the thing on the wall (but I chose not to, so I can maintain portability). It comes with a stand, and that’s the reason I took off an entire star! They need to have the stand actually snap into the bottom, instead of kind of stacked on top. If you move it the lamp even a tiny bit to reposition it, the stand falls off. It’s also very small which adds to a bit of instability unless you place the lamp on a very flat, firm surface. For safety reasons, you shouldn’t place lamps or other heat sources on soft, possibly flammable surfaces. I read a few reviews where people smelled burning because they might have used a power cord other than the one that comes with the unit. The unit does give off a certain amount of heat (from the light, not that it’s catching fire) after it’s been on for awhile. But I’m cold most of the time, so it’s a plus for me. The real sun is also warm, but the lamp is supposed to not have any (or very little) UV rays. Speaking of rays, I don’t think this is the lamp for people who might need a therapy lamp for skin conditions. like psoriasis. I had a friend with that condition who had to go to actual tanning salons to get the amount of “sun” exposure to help control his condition. So, before you buy this therapy lamp, check with a medical professional to find out if you need THIS kind of therapy lamp, or an infrared therapy lamp because they are not interchangeable and may cause more harm than good if you use the wrong one. Meanwhile, I’m going to listen to my body and how it responds. I think it will help once I figure out how best to use it and when. I’m glad there’s a set timer along with choice of warm and cool light, and 3 brightness levels. I forget to turn things off. I initially bought a combo desk/therapy lamp by the company, and while it was a very nice desk lamp, it was definitely more desk lamp than therapy. The lamp light wasn’t even as strong and bright as my regular lamps, so I sent it back, paid a bit more, and got this one. The desk lamp was fine, but not what I needed. Verilux makes several styles of lamps with different features and price points, so you want to check the stats to make sure you buy the one that will work best for your situation.

As other customers have stated, the stand fails spectacularly as it does not click into the body of the device. Also, upon looking at many clinical trials and metadata studies to better understand the benefits of BLT (Bright Light Technology) the light should be facing down slightly at eye level, not up from desk level (which is not eye level). From below it seems to make viewing a monitor for work, TV or hand held device a little challenging to see.More time will be required to determine if this actually has a positive benefit on SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), but I honestly hope it does.Three stars for “construction”

  7. Amazon Customer CDN

We use this in a bedroom that normally receives poor daytime light and is especially so in the winter months, in order to provide a sunnier atmosphere during the wintertime. We have used it other seasons as well, by shining it onto a wall to illuminate the room better as the evening wears on. We find this effective in feeling a prolonged exposure to light and that it is effective in feeling more awake and alert as compared to when we did not have the light. The fact that the light can be adjusted to a warmer tone or cooler tone, and to varying intensities is most helpful as different users in the home prefer different settings. Definitely recommend. Also the customer service at Verilux is excellent!

This thing is compact enough you can put it anywhere, carry it anywhere. The light is bright but it doesn’t really hurt your eyes, its pleasant. I do 20 mins every morning and I do feel my mood overall in the day improved.
